The bodies of a young Afghan couple were discovered late Sunday night in the basement of a shop in Tehran’s Qiamdasht district, Iranian media reported on Monday.

The discovery followed a call to the emergency police hotline, whereupon a forensic team was dispatched to the scene, local reports said. Preliminary police findings suggested the two had gone into the basement for reasons not yet clear. When their bodies were found, a power generator was running nearby.

Iranian news outlet Rokna reported that authorities suspect possible carbon monoxide poisoning, but investigators have not ruled out foul play.

According to reports, the young man had been employed at the shop and had entered the basement with the woman earlier that evening. After their bodies were found, a prosecutor ordered the shop owner’s arrest for questioning.

The remains have been transferred to the medical examiner’s office for further investigation, officials said. Police inquiries into the deaths are ongoing.
