Taliban say migrants’ deportation from Germany was coordinated with their administration

Taliban said on Friday that the deportation of 81 Afghan nationals from Germany had been carried out in coordination with their administration and that the individuals were expected to arrive in Kabul the same day.

In a statement, the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry said it was continuing discussions with German authorities to provide what it called “transparent and standardized consular services” for Afghan citizens residing in Germany.

The deportation, which took place early Friday morning, marks Germany’s second such transfer of Afghan migrants since the Taliban seized power in August 2021. According to the German Interior Ministry, those on board had either received final deportation orders or had criminal records.

German officials have faced mounting domestic political pressure in recent months to restart removals of Afghan nationals with criminal backgrounds, despite ongoing warnings from humanitarian groups and the United Nations that Afghanistan remains unsafe for forced returns.

Berlin has no formal diplomatic relations with the Taliban and manages its limited engagement with the Taliban through a liaison office in Doha. Nonetheless, the Taliban have increasingly sought to assert control over Afghan migration and consular matters abroad.
