Trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan reached nearly $40 million in the first five months of 2025, marking a 31.1 percent increase compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the Agency on Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.
Of that total, Tajik exports to Afghanistan accounted for roughly $32 million, or 80 percent of bilateral trade, while imports from Afghanistan stood at approximately $8 million, local media reported, citing official figures.
Electricity remained Tajikistan’s largest export to Afghanistan, followed by cement, coal, mineral fertilizers, and a smaller share of food products. Afghan goods entering Tajikistan include agricultural products such as figs, raisins, and cotton, along with carpets and precious or semi-precious stones—items that have steadily gained a foothold in the Tajik market.
Afghanistan continues to rank among Tajikistan’s top 10 export destinations, following countries such as the Netherlands, China, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
From January to May 2025, Tajikistan conducted trade with 107 countries, with overall foreign trade turnover reaching $3.9 billion, up 2.8 percent year-on-year.
Despite the rise in total trade, exports declined by 11.3 percent, totaling $780 million, while imports increased by 7 percent, exceeding $3.1 billion.
Russia, China, and Kazakhstan remain Tajikistan’s largest trade partners by volume.
Experts say the growth in commerce with Afghanistan reflects a modest but notable diversification in Tajikistan’s foreign trade portfolio, even as the broader economic environment remains shaped by regional uncertainty and shifting market dynamics.
