WASHINGTON — Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican from Montana, has announced efforts to advance the No Taxpayer Funding for Terrorists Act in the U.S. Senate, a bill aimed at preventing American financial aid from reaching Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
Sheehy, a former Navy officer who served in counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, said he is leading the legislation in the Senate.
“After fighting terrorists for years in Iraq and Afghanistan, I’m proud to lead the No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act in the U.S. Senate,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s America First common sense!”
The bill was originally introduced in the House of Representatives by Republican Congressman Tim Burchett and was passed during President Biden’s administration. However, it failed to secure Senate approval for various reasons.
Burchett has urged senators to pass the legislation swiftly so it can be signed into law by President Donald Trump.
He has also called on Trump to halt what he claims is the weekly transfer of $40 million in U.S. funds to the Taliban.
The bill was previously blocked from a Senate vote by then-Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. If passed, it would prohibit the U.S. from sending financial aid to Afghanistan while the Taliban remains in power.
