KABUL — At least one person was killed and five others were wounded in a bombing outside Afghanistan’s Ministry of Urban Development in Kabul on Thursday morning, according to EMERGENCY, an Italian medical organization that operates a hospital in the capital.

The blast happened at 9:30am local time, the organization said.

“Six patients have been received at EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Kabul, four of whom remain seriously injured. One man has died from his injuries,” the organization said in a statement.

Dejan Panic, EMERGENCY’s country director in Afghanistan, confirmed that the injured arrived both by private means and public ambulance services.

“Afghan civilians, already suffering from an unprecedented economic crisis, are paying the consequences of these explosions,” Panic said.

Taliban said the bomber was killed before reaching his target at the entrance of the ministry in Kabul’s Police District 9 (PD9).

According to EMERGENCY, nearly 22.9 million people—almost half of Afghanistan’s population—will require humanitarian assistance to survive in 2025.

As international attention on Afghanistan fades, EMERGENCY continues to provide free medical care across the country, operating three surgical centers, a maternity center, and over 40 First Aid Posts and health clinics. The organization warns that 48% of the population now lives below the poverty line, with many struggling to afford basic necessities.

Despite more than three years since the Taliban takeover, violence continues to claim lives, with medical workers still treating a steady influx of war-wounded patients.

“We continue to see people arrive at the Kabul Surgical Centre with injuries from stab wounds, gunshots, shrapnel, and mines,” Panic said.

In 2024 alone, 1,452 patients with war-related injuries were admitted to EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Kabul.
