GAZA CITY — Thousands of displaced Palestinians traveled north through Gaza’s main Salah al-Din Street on Sunday after Israel withdrew from parts of the area, allowing more residents to return home.
Long lines of vehicles formed along the road as Gazans waited to pass through an Israeli checkpoint. Many were making their way back to northern Gaza, some leaving behind the destruction of Gaza City, which loomed in the background.
The movement followed the latest phase of a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
After the release of more Israeli hostages on Saturday, the Israeli military was expected to withdraw from the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic route that had effectively divided northern and southern Gaza.
