KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban will begin paying public employees their January salaries on Saturday, Feb. 10, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said, even as workers remain unpaid for the past two months, deepening financial strain on thousands of civil servants.
Mujahid said in a statement on X that the payments would be distributed in phases.
Specific government agencies would receive funds on the first day, with remaining ministries and offices scheduled to be paid over the following four days.
The announcement follows reports from multiple public employees who told Amu TV that they had not received their salaries for December or January, leaving many in increasingly difficult financial situations.
Taliban have not publicly addressed the cause of the delays, but the backlog has added to the economic strain on Afghanistan’s civil servants, many of whom are already struggling amid the country’s deepening financial crisis.
