EU envoy, Tajikistan’s foreign minister discuss Afghanistan, regional security concerns

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan — The European Union’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Tomas Niklasson, met with Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Tajikistan’s foreign minister, to discuss developments in Afghanistan and regional security concerns, according to a statement from the Tajik Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting on February 3, the two officials held a “productive dialogue” on the situation in Afghanistan and explored avenues for cooperation in addressing security threats and other regional challenges, the statement said.

The discussions also covered the expansion of bilateral relations between Tajikistan and the European Union across various sectors.

Tajikistan remains one of the few countries in the region that has yet to establish close ties with the Taliban. Dushanbe has repeatedly expressed concerns about the presence of militant groups in northern Afghanistan and the increasing flow of narcotics across the border.
