The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Tuesday that Denmark has contributed $2.8 million to support humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan.

In a statement on X, OCHA said the funds have been allocated to the U.N. Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan.

“Financial support from global donors strengthens the capacity of aid organizations in Afghanistan to respond quickly to crises,” the statement read.

The contribution comes as Afghanistan faces a severe hunger crisis, with the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) estimating that nearly 15 million people are experiencing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity this winter.

“Approximately 15 million people in Afghanistan are expected to face food insecurity at crisis or emergency levels this winter,” the WFP said in a report. The organization has begun distributing food to remote communities that are increasingly isolated due to snow and ice, aiming to provide critical assistance before conditions worsen.

However, the WFP has warned that a severe funding shortage has hampered its operations in Afghanistan.

According to WFP, more than three-quarters of Afghanistan’s population cannot afford a nutritious diet that meets their basic needs and prevents malnutrition.
