Hyena trapped in Nangarhar released back into the wild

NANGARHAR, Afghanistan — A wild hyena, captured earlier by local nomads in the eastern province of Nangarhar, has been released back into its natural habitat, according to a statement by the Taliban-run information and culture directorate.

In a statement, the department said the animal was caught by nomadic herders in the Kashkot village of Khogyani District.

The statement said that the provincial environmental protection agency facilitated the hyena’s release.

The incident comes amid growing concerns from environmental activists and Afghan citizens over the hunting of rare and endangered wildlife in the country.

Conservationists stress that protecting these species is vital for maintaining Afghanistan’s biodiversity and preserving its fragile ecosystems, which have been severely impacted by decades of conflict and instability.

Afghanistan’s rare wildlife population has dwindled significantly due to years of war, habitat destruction, and poaching. Environmentalists are calling for increased efforts to protect endangered species and prioritize conservation over hunting.
