Salang Pass reopens to traffic after temporary closure

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Salang Pass, a critical roadway linking northern and southern Afghanistan, has reopened to traffic, the Taliban-led Ministry of Public Works announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the ministry, both small and large passenger vehicles are now permitted to travel in both directions during daylight hours.

Freight trucks will be allowed to cross the pass on a rotating schedule, with north-to-south movement authorized on Tuesday. The schedule will alternate in the coming days, the statement added.

The Salang Pass, which traverses rugged mountainous terrain, serves as one of Afghanistan’s most vital transport routes, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers across the country.
