ATHENS—Greek authorities recovered the body of a man and rescued 39 migrants after a boat capsized off the southern island of Gavdos in the Mediterranean, the coastguard reported Saturday.
Witnesses indicated that many passengers are still missing. Search and rescue operations, involving vessels and aircraft, have been underway since authorities were alerted to the incident on Friday night.
In separate incidents on Saturday, a Malta-flagged cargo ship rescued 47 migrants from a boat located about 40 nautical miles from Gavdos, while a tanker rescued another 88 migrants roughly 28 nautical miles from the island.
Initial reports suggest that the boats departed from Libya, according to coastguard officials.
Greece has long been a key entry point for migrants and refugees seeking to reach the European Union. During the peak of the migrant crisis in 2015-2016, nearly one million people arrived on its shores, mostly via inflatable boats.
