Work begins on new road connecting Kabul to Jalalabad Highway

The road is expected to connect eastern Kabul with the Kabul-Jalalabad Highway.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Construction began Monday on the Bagrami-Lata Band road in eastern Kabul, a critical stretch that connects to the Kabul-Jalalabad Highway.

The first section of the project spans 3.3 kilometers and is 60 meters wide.

Funded at a cost of 340 million Afghanis, or about $4.9 million, the roadway aims to improve access to Kabul’s remote eastern areas and bolster economic activity in the region.

“This road is more than just a route; it’s an essential economic corridor that will boost connectivity and trade in southeastern Afghanistan,” said Miralrahman Nasiri, the Taliban’s head of the Programs and Projects Department at Kabul Municipality.

Taliban officials, quoted by the state-run Bakhtar News Agency, said the construction is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Preliminary work, including excavation, earthworks, clearing, and the removal of obstacles, is already underway to prepare the site for full-scale construction, they said.
