Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan, said during a meeting with the Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, that a senior Russian delegation is set to visit Afghanistan in the near future.
According to a statement from the Taliban-run Foreign Ministry, the delegation will discuss expanding cooperation between Russia and the Taliban government.
The statement noted that the two sides deliberated on economic cooperation, investment opportunities, and transit issues.
“The Foreign Minister [Amir Khan Muttaqi] emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and trade relations between Russia and the Islamic Emirate,” the statement said.
Kabulov’s office has not commented on the matter yet.
Regional engagement intensifies
Kabulov’s visit follows that of China’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, who recently held meetings with senior Taliban officials to discuss bilateral relations.
These visits are part of a growing wave of regional engagement with Afghanistan, particularly following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.
Russia, China, and Iran—often described as the triangle of power in Asia—appear to be seeking a unified approach to Afghanistan. Analysts suggest that these countries are working to strengthen their influence in the region amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
