As corporal punishments continue, Taliban flogged a man in public in Maidan Wardak Province on charges of “sodomy”.
The Taliban-run supreme court’s said in a statement that the man was sentenced to 39 lashes and a two-year prison term following a trial in Sayedabad district.
In the past month, Taliban have publicly flogged more than 90 people, including women, across various provinces for alleged crimes. This increase in public corporal punishment has drawn widespread condemnation.
The United Nations, in its quarterly report covering July to September, documented that the Taliban publicly whipped 111 individuals across Afghanistan in this period, including 95 men, 15 women, and one girl. The report, which details instances of public punishment, highlights concerns over human rights abuses under the Taliban’s interpretation of justice.
Last month, the United Nations Human Rights Council condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and called for an immediate halt. Amnesty International has also raised concerns, stating that the absence of fair judicial structures in Taliban-run courts heightens the risk of serious human rights violations.
