NEW DELHI — Haze blanketed major Indian cities, including New Delhi and Mumbai, on Sunday as air quality plummeted to hazardous levels across the country, showing little sign of improvement.
“It’s hard to breathe in the morning,” said Aditya, a New Delhi resident. “Doctors recommend we exercise in the morning, but with air like this, I’d rather not go outside.”
The National Air Quality Index recorded air quality in several parts of New Delhi at “severe” levels, while conditions in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, declined to “poor.”
A thick layer of haze obscured buildings and monuments in both cities, with visibility so reduced that even the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra was barely visible.
