QUETTA, Pakistan — A powerful blast targeted the convoy of a Balochistan provincial lawmaker on Wednesday, killing at least one person and wounding ten others, authorities said.
The explosion occurred on Sariab Road in Quetta as Member of the Provincial Assembly Ali Madad Jatak was en route to a public celebration marking Pakistan’s recent cricket victory over India. Jatak escaped unharmed, but several bystanders and members of his entourage were injured in the blast.
Rescue teams responded swiftly, transporting the wounded to the emergency unit of Quetta’s Civil Hospital. Hospital officials later confirmed that several of the injured had been transferred to the Trauma Centre, where some remain in critical condition.
Police have launched an investigation into the attack, which they say struck just moments before Mr. Jatak was scheduled to appear at a rally at the city’s Hockey Ground, a venue that had drawn hundreds of participants.
Security forces quickly sealed off the area, and additional units were deployed to secure the celebration site. Authorities have not yet confirmed the nature of the device or named any suspects.
The incident underscores the persistent threat of violence in Balochistan, where political figures and public gatherings remain frequent targets of militant attacks. Provincial officials said they are reviewing security protocols for public events in light of the bombing.
