Iran executes two more Afghan nationals, rights group reports

Iran has executed two more Afghan nationals, according to the Iranian human rights organization Hengaw. The two men, Ayoub Sangar, 26, and Abdul Raqib Maliki, were put to death on Tuesday in Qom Central Prison, after being convicted of murder.

Both men had been imprisoned in Iran for the past four years and were sentenced to death by an Iranian court.

This news comes as a senior Iranian official recently disclosed that nearly 1,250 Afghan nationals are currently held in Iranian prisons.

Human rights groups have raised concerns, noting that the execution rate of Afghan nationals has increased since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021.
