Taliban publicly flog five people in Kandahar amid ongoing use of corporal punishment

In the latest series of public corporal punishments, Taliban flogged five individuals in public in the southern province of Kandahar on Wednesday.

According to the Taliban’s Supreme Court, each person received 39 lashes on charges of “adultery, sodomy, and theft”.

With these recent cases, the number of people publicly flogged by the Taliban in Kandahar and elsewhere on Wednesday, October 9, has risen to nine.

In addition to flogging, in Kandahar, the Taliba court sentenced one individual to seven years in prison, another to six years, two to three years, and one to two years.

In the past three weeks, the Taliban have publicly flogged more than 20 individuals across various provinces, underscoring the resurgence of such punishments under their rule.

According to data gathered by Amu TV from Taliban statements, over the last three years, more than 700 people have been publicly flogged in multiple provinces.

The United Nations, in a recent quarterly report, noted that the Taliban continue to carry out corporal punishment despite international condemnation. Amnesty International has also raised concerns about the lack of access to a fair judicial process in Taliban-run courts, calling it a significant human rights issue.
