The Taliban-run meteorology department has issued warnings of heavy rainfall, floods, and thunderstorms across 26 provinces in Afghanistan between October 5 and 6.
The affected provinces include Badakhshan, Nuristan, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Logar, Khost, Paktia, Kabul, Kapisa, Panjshir, Baghlan, Parwan, Maidan Wardak, Samangan, Ghazni, Bamyan, Daikundi, Ghor, Balkh, Sar-e Pol, Faryab, Badghis, Herat, Helmand, and Farah.
The department predicted rainfall ranging from 15 to 45 millimeters, with wind speeds expected to reach between 50 and 80 kilometers per hour, particularly in areas already vulnerable to severe weather.
Afghanistan is ranked as the sixth most vulnerable country to climate change by the United Nations, and the warning comes just a week after floods and storms hit Nangarhar province, where at least three people were killed and 20 injured in Kuz Kunar district. The country regularly faces natural disasters, compounded by poor infrastructure and limited resources to mitigate their impact.
