Pakistani police have arrested 120 Afghan nationals who were among demonstrators at a protest organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the political party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, according to the country’s Interior Minister.
Khan, who is currently imprisoned, has sparked large protests across several cities near Islamabad as supporters demand his release.
Mohsin Naqvi, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, raised concerns about the presence of Afghan nationals at the protests and the use of tear gas by demonstrators against police. The protests have taken place as Pakistan prepares to host an upcoming session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
In response to the unrest, the Pakistani government has increased security measures, blocking routes into Islamabad and temporarily suspending telecommunication services since Friday. Naqvi warned that anyone attempting to enter the capital to cause chaos would be held accountable, signaling a firm stance against the protests.
The demonstrations come during a sensitive time for Pakistan, as the country is hosting a series of high-profile diplomatic visits. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently in Islamabad, followed by an anticipated visit from a high-level Saudi Arabian delegation and the Prime Minister of China. Naqvi emphasized the need to maintain order amid these important international visits.
