Over 240 Afghan migrant families return from Pakistan and Iran

As deportations continue, 242 migrant families returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran on Friday, according to the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees.

The ministry stated that some of the families were forcibly deported, while others left voluntarily.

Of the returning families, 65 came from Pakistan and 176 from Iran.

Those coming from Iran crossed through the Islam Qala and Silk border points, while families returning from Pakistan entered via the Torkham and Spin Boldak crossings.

A survey conducted by Amu with migrants revealed that “unemployment” and “deteriorating economic conditions” were the main drivers behind the illegal migration of Afghan citizens.

Since September 2023, more than 733,000 Afghan migrants have returned from Pakistan, according to a report by the United Nations. Afghan migrants in both neighboring countries continue to face significant challenges, including limited access to basic services.

Iran has reiterated its stance on the deportation of Afghan migrants from its territory.
