The sixth Moscow Format meeting, hosted by Russia, has begun with representatives from several regional countries gathering to discuss broader security and political issues, with a primary focus on Afghanistan.
The agenda includes key challenges related to Afghanistan, such as terrorism, narcotics trafficking, and the worsening humanitarian crisis. Delegates from China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Central Asian nations are attending the meeting. A Taliban delegation, led by Amir Khan Muttaqi, who remains on the United Nations sanctions list, is also present.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, noted that discussions will address regional security concerns, including Afghanistan’s peace process, the formation of an inclusive government, counterterrorism efforts, and narcotics control, as well as the broader economic and political challenges facing the region.
The meeting, which is being held behind closed doors, is part of the Moscow Format talks that Russia initiated in 2017 to foster regional dialogue on security issues. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to deliver a statement, and a resolution is anticipated at the conclusion of the talks.
