Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the Moscow Format talks on Afghanistan are set to take place on Friday, October 4.
The meeting, aimed at addressing the ongoing challenges in Afghanistan, will include a Taliban delegation led by Amir Khan Muttaqi.
Maria Zakharova, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, shared details of the meeting during her weekly press briefing on Wednesday.
She outlined that the agenda will focus on several pressing issues, including the stalled Afghan peace process, efforts to form an inclusive government, combating terrorism and drug trafficking, and addressing Afghanistan’s deepening economic and political crises.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is slated to deliver a keynote address at the gathering.
According to Zakharova, the talks are expected to culminate in the adoption of a resolution aimed at advancing diplomatic efforts and coordinating international support for Afghanistan.
Following the formal discussions, Lavrov is scheduled to hold a separate bilateral meeting with the Taliban delegation. This meeting is expected to focus on strengthening ties between Russia and the Taliban-led government, as well as exploring avenues for Russian assistance to the war-torn nation.
The Moscow Format—an initiative led by Russia to facilitate dialogue on Afghanistan—has played a critical role in regional diplomacy since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The format includes key regional players such as China, Pakistan, and Iran, and serves as a platform for broader cooperation on Afghan-related issues.
