At least 2,000 women are currently incarcerated in Taliban prisons, according to the Taliban’s prisons department.
A Taliban official for the prison told Amu that these women have been imprisoned on charges ranging from “running away from home” to theft and drug-related offenses.
The United Nations and human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Taliban for what they describe as “arbitrary” arrests, particularly targeting women.
Reports from various organizations, including the United Nations, indicate that over the past three years, the Taliban have detained dozens of women’s rights activists for “raising their voices in pursuit of their rights.”
In a previous revelation, Zarmina Pariyani, a women’s rights activist, claimed that she was stripped naked by Taliban guards during her detention, an allegation that sparked widespread domestic and international condemnation.
