Two young women drowned in the Kokcha River in Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan, according to local Taliban officials.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the women were visiting the riverbank in the provincial capital, Faizabad, for leisure.
Mohammad Kamgar, the Taliban’s head of Natural Disaster Management in Badakhshan, confirmed the incident, stating that the women were between 18 and 21 years old.
He said they were walking along the sandy shores of the Kokcha River when they accidentally fell in and drowned.
Local residents retrieved the bodies from the river.
Sources reported that in the past two months, more than 10 people, including three women, have drowned in the Kokcha River in Faizabad.
