Amidst the exclusion of female lawyers from practicing their profession and participating in bar exam exams over the past three years, Taliban announced Sunday it had renewed 1,590 defense lawyer licenses in the past year.
The Taliban-run Ministry of Justice stated on Sunday that they have drafted 101 “legislative documents” over the past year. Officials from the ministry also reported drafting and revising 50 procedures, regulations, and decrees from their leader during the same period.
Last month, Taliban conducted the bar examination for the third consecutive year without the participation of women, with over 500 male applicants taking part.
Since their return to power on August 15, 2021, the Taliban has issued numerous decrees imposing severe restrictions on the fundamental rights of women in Afghanistan.
They have banned girls above the sixth grade from continuing their education and have closed university doors to women and girls. Notably, during nearly three years of Taliban rule, girls have been barred from participating in university entrance exams, which have been conducted nationwide without the presence of a single female student.
