Afghan judokas competing for refugee team defeated at Paris Olympics

Sibghatullah Arab and Nigara Shaheen, Afghan judokas competing as part of the Refugee Olympic Team, were both defeated by their opponents in the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

Arab, 23, competed in the under-81 kg category and lost to Matthias Casse of Belgium with a score of 11-1.

In the women’s category, Nigara Shaheen was defeated by Mexico’s Prisca Awiti Alcaraz. Shahin, competing in the under-63 kg category, was eliminated in the first round.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are currently underway, with Afghan swimmer Fahim Anwari scheduled to compete in the 50-meter freestyle on Thursday.

Afghanistan is represented at the Paris Olympics by Fahim Anwari in swimming, Kimia Yousufi in women’s athletics, Mohammad Samim Faizzada in judo, Fariba Hashemi in cycling, Shah Mahmood Noorzehi in men’s athletics, and Yulduz Hashemi in cycling.

Additionally, five other Afghan athletes are participating as part of the International Olympic Committee’s Refugee Team.
