CSTO chief cites Afghanistan as main source of instability

NEW YORK — Imangali Tasmagambetov, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has identified Afghanistan as the primary source of instability in Central Asia.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting, Tasmagambetov said, “The CSTO has developed a working group to address the challenges in that country, such as the threat of the spread of terrorism, radical ideology, and criminal drug trafficking.”

The French representative at the meeting expressed concern about the situation in Afghanistan, citing numerous human rights violations by the Taliban. He emphasized the important role of regional countries, particularly members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, in reiterating international demands, combating terrorism, and curbing drug trafficking.

The representative from Guyana highlighted the challenges posed by terrorism, illegal migration, and drug trafficking in Afghanistan. She called for increased support for political dialogue among all Afghan stakeholders.

Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, regional and international concerns about rising terrorist threats in the country have intensified.
