Five Killed in traffic accident in northeastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — At least five people were killed and 13 others injured in a traffic accident on Wednesday in the northeastern province of Badakhshan, according to a Taliban statement.

The Taliban-run Bakhtar news agency reported that the accident occurred when a Land Cruiser overturned in the Kohistan district of Badakhshan. Doctors have described the condition of four of the injured as critical.

This incident is part of a troubling trend of increasing traffic accidents in the region. On Tuesday, at least 17 people were killed and 34 others injured in an accident on the Salang Highway.

Experts have cited deteriorated and poor road conditions as a primary cause of the rising number of traffic accidents across the country.
