Iranian official says 95% of foreign prisoners are Afghan nationals

An Iranian judicial official, Kazem Gharibabadi, has said that 95 percent of the foreign prisoners in Iran are Afghan nationals.

Gharibabadi stated at a press conference on Friday that an agreement is being negotiated to facilitate the transfer of these inmates from Iranian prisons to Afghanistan.

He expressed hope that the two sides would soon reach a breakthrough in the agreement.

However, Gharibabadi did not disclose the exact number of Afghan inmates.

In a recent development, the Taliban-run embassy in Tehran reported that in June 2023, 178 Afghan inmates were handed over to Taliban officials.
