Amnesty International urges Taliban to protect human rights in Afghanistan

Amnesty International has called on the Taliban to respect and protect human rights in Afghanistan, highlighting several areas of concern including the denial of female access to education.

The human rights watchdog named a series of violations allegedly committed by the Taliban, including corporal punishment, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, gender persecution of women, and the denial of education. “Human rights violations and abuses including corporal punishment, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, gender persecution of women, and denial of education must end,” Amnesty International stated on social media platform X.

Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghan girls and women have been systematically deprived of their rights. UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan Human Rights Richard Bennett also criticized the Taliban’s actions on X, emphasizing that Afghan women and girls have the right to participate in sports.

The Taliban has reportedly implemented corporal punishment on hundreds of individuals across various provinces. Most recently, on Wednesday, an individual in Kandahar was flogged. The practice of flogging those accused of various crimes began in December 2022.
