Ex-AFP photojournalist Hoshang Hashimi dies in US

Hoshang Hashimi, a former AFP photojournalist from Afghanistan, passed away in the US on Saturday, sources confirmed to Amu.

According to sources, Hashimi had been battling cancer since last year.

Hashimi was acclaimed for his work, winning several national and international awards. He worked with various national and international media organizations.

From 2010 to 2016, he served as a radio reporter with Deutsche Welle (DW). He then worked as a photojournalist with The Associated Press (AP) and Agence France-Presse (AFP) from 2017 to 2021.

In 2019, Hashimi won the best photographer award at a festival in France. The well-known Afghan journalist lived in exile in France for a period following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

According to the American aid organization “Give a Hand,” Hashimi and his wife arrived in the U.S. on special visas in January 2023. He had been suffering from oral and dental cancer.
