Taliban diplomat presents credentials to Turkish foreign ministry

Afghanistan’s embassy in Ankara, which is currently operated by the Taliban, announced on Thursday that Saniullah Farhamand, the Taliban’s envoy to Turkey, has presented his diplomatic credentials to Ahmet Cemil Miroğlu, the chief of protocol at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The embassy, in a post on the social platform X, said the meeting took place at the ministry’s headquarters in the Turkish capital. The two sides discussed political, cultural and religious ties between Turkey and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

According to Taliban, Miroğlu expressed hope that Farhamand would soon present his formal credentials to “senior officials of the Republic of Turkey.”

Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban have sought to establish or maintain diplomatic ties with regional powers, including Turkey. However, no country — Turkey included — has formally recognized the Taliban administration over their violations of human rights. Although Taliban claimed on Thursday that Russia had recognized their administration.

The international community has called on the Taliban to respect human rights, especially the rights of women and girls.
