Nizhny Novgorod, Russia — The BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs have issued a statement emphasizing the urgent need for a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan to enhance regional security and stability.
“The Ministers emphasized the need for an urgent peaceful settlement in Afghanistan in order to strengthen regional security and stability,” the statement read.
The ministers advocated for Afghanistan to become an independent, united, and peaceful state free from terrorism, war, and drugs. They also called for verifiable measures to ensure Afghan territory is not used by terrorists.
Additionally, the BRICS ministers highlighted the importance of providing urgent and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, safeguarding the fundamental rights of all Afghans, including women, girls, and various ethnic groups.
The ministers underscored the primary role of regional platforms and neighboring countries in facilitating an Afghan settlement, welcoming their efforts to promote peace.
The meeting, held on June 10, 2024, in Nizhny Novgorod, saw BRICS ministers exchange views on global and regional issues. They reaffirmed their commitment to the BRICS Strategic Partnership, which focuses on politics and security, economy and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Welcoming the participation of new BRICS members, the ministers assured their continued support for their integration into BRICS cooperation mechanisms.
