KABUL, Afghanistan — The United Nations’ Food Agency has projected that 12.4 million people in Afghanistan will face acute food insecurity from May to October 2024.
According to the World Food Programme (WFP), 2.9 million of these individuals are classified in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 4, indicating an emergency level of food insecurity. The report also noted that 4 million people are acutely malnourished, including 3.2 million children under the age of five.
The WFP’s report further stated that at least 23.7 million people in Afghanistan will require humanitarian assistance in 2024. The agency highlighted the impact of recent floods in six provinces, which have devastated villages, destroyed thousands of houses, flooded agricultural fields, and drowned livestock.
As Afghanistan continues to face these severe challenges, the need for international aid and intervention remains critical.
