The U.S. Department of State spokesman, Matthew Miller, has urged countries to seek permission before hosting UN-sanctioned Taliban members, in response to a question about the visit of the Taliban’s interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
Addressing reporters in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Miller emphasized that such visits should occur through an exemption process outlined by the UN Sanctions Committee. “Member states hosting UN-sanctioned Taliban members must seek permission for travel through an exemption process, as outlined by the UN 1988 Sanctions Committee,” he said. “It is important that member states follow these procedures.”
This statement comes as Sirajuddin Haqqani, who has a $10 million bounty on his head listed by the FBI, recently traveled to the UAE, where he met with the country’s president, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
