Afghanistan: Floods in Faryab claim 18 lives

Eighteen people were killed and two more were injured in flash floods in the northern province of Faryab, according to a Taliban statement on Sunday.

The floods hit Pashtun Kot, Almar, Qaisar, Belcheragh, Khwaja Sabz Posh, and Dawlat Abad districts of Faryab on Saturday, May 18, Taliban-run refugees ministry said.

The statement added that the floods caused significant financial losses to the residents of the province.

According to the statement, the floods destroyed 560 residential houses, 150 hectares of agricultural land, 110 shops, a mobile clinic, and 2,300 fruit and non-fruit trees in the districts of this province.

This comes as as 50 people died, and several others went missing due to floods in Ghor and Badghis provinces in the west of the country on Saturday, May 18.

Additionally, last week’s floods in Baghlan province resulted in over 315 deaths and injured more than 1,600 people.
