Afghanistan: Flash floods in Takhar kill 20, injure 80

At least 20 people were killed and 80 others injured in flash floods that swept through several parts of the northeastern Takhar province, a Taliban spokesman said, with the death toll expected to rise.

Abdul Matin Safi, spokesman for the Taliban’s security department in Takhar, said in an audio message that the floods affected the districts of Ishkmash, Chaal, Namakab, and Farkhar. Safi reported that numerous homes have been destroyed.

Social media users posted a video claiming that the Falal area of Burka district in Baghlan province was submerged by floodwaters.

Previously, Taliban’s Department of Disaster Management reported that 50 bodies had been recovered from the floods, but the deputy head of the province’s public works department of the Taliban later updated the death toll to 150.

The recent floods have also impacted several other provinces including Herat, Kunduz, Faryab, Badghis, and Ghor, resulting in additional fatalities and injuries.

Affected individuals have expressed dissatisfaction, complaining about the lack of essential assistance and what they perceive as negligence by aid organizations.
