Afghanistan: 21 killed in Kabul-Herat Highway traffic collision

At least 21 people were killed when a passenger bus collided with a fuel tanker on the Kabul-Herat Highway in the Gereshk district of Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, on Sunday.

The bus was traveling to Kabul from the western province of Herat.

Sources indicate that the crash resulted in at least 30 people killed or injured. However, the Taliban-operated national broadcaster reported 21 fatalities and 38 injuries.

The accident occurred in Yakhchal village, Gereshk district, according to a local source. The injured were taken to the district hospital in Gereshk and the emergency hospital in the province.

The Kabul-Herat highway has been the site of numerous deadly traffic accidents, often attributed to driver negligence and poor road conditions.
