Afghan migrant Abbas Karimi, now a resident of the United States, secured a bronze medal in freestyle swimming at the Parapan American Games on Sunday.
Representing the United States, Karimi attained the bronze in the 50-meter freestyle event held in Santiago.
Expressing his gratitude on Instagram, Karimi stated, “Alhamdulillah for the victory Bronze in 50m Freestyle.”
Karimi is poised for further competition, scheduled for the 50-meter butterfly swimming on Monday and the 100-meter freestyle on Tuesday.
Originally hailing from Afghanistan, Karimi was previously a member of the Refugee Para Athlete team, participating in the Mexico City 2017 and London 2019 World Championships, as well as the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
He made his debut for the USA at the World Championships in Madeira, Portugal, in 2022.
