Taliban on Sunday declared the temporary closure of the Salang Pass to all traffic, citing the need for reconstruction work on an 80-kilometer stretch of the highway that links the country’s capital with northern Afghanistan.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Public Works explained that the decision was taken to expedite the reconstruction efforts along this vital route.
According to the ministry, the project will be carried out in two phases, though no specific timeline has been provided.
They further disclosed that local private companies have been awarded the contract for the project, emphasizing that the reconstruction of the highway will encompass comprehensive improvements.
Despite several prior reconstruction attempts over the past two decades, the Salang Pass has posed ongoing challenges for drivers due to subpar workmanship.
