Crane collapse kills 17 workers in India’s Maharashtra state

At least 17 workers were killed and several others were feared trapped after a crane collapsed during the construction of a bridge on Monday evening in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, officials said.

Footage carried by local television showed mangled remains of the crane sprawled on the ground between pillars of the bridge near the Shahapur area, about 50 miles (80 km) from the state capital Mumbai.

According to eyewitness accounts, the collapse happened at around 11 P.M. local time (1730 GMT) on Monday evening.

“There were 27 workers at the site, 17 of them have died in this (accident),” local Shahapur legislator Daulat Daroda told media during a visit to the accident site on Tuesday.

Modi’s office announced relief assistance of 200,000 rupees ($2,430) for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees ($608) for the injured.
