At least 11 people died, including two in eastern Laghman province in Afghanistan and nine in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake with its epicenter in Afghanistan struck the region on Tuesday night.
Two sources from Laghman said that four others, all women, were wounded in the earthquake in the province.
Pakistani media report that at least 44 more were wounded in the earthquake in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake’s epicenter was near Jurm district in north-eastern Badakhshan province and had a depth of 187.6 kilometers.
Shaking was felt over an area 1,000 kilometers wide by approximately 285 million people in Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
The earthquake on Tuesday was among the intermediate ones that are between 70km and 300km in depth.
On Jan. 29, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattled parts of Islamabad on January 29 while a magnitude 5.6 earthquake jolted some districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Jan 19, according to Pakistani media reports.
Last year, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in eastern Paktika province in Afghanistan killed over 1,000 people.
