At least seven people were killed and three others injured in a shooting attack in a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem on Friday night.
Israeli police said the attack occurred as a large group of residents gathered to observe the Jewish sabbath near a synagogue in East Jerusalem.
The gunman, a 21-year-old, was shot dead by the police when he attempted to flee in a car, and then identified as an East Jerusalem resident, according to a statement from Israeli police.
The motive for the shooting was not clear, and no organization claimed responsibility for the attack.
But a spokesperson for the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has said this incident is clearly in retaliation for the Israeli forces’ Thursday raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, which killed at least nine Palestinians and injured several others.
Tensions have been high after the Israeli raid. Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip fired rockets into Israel, which retaliated by launching airstrikes. No casualties were reported as yet.
