Uzbekistan confirmed Monday night that it had suspended electricity to Afghanistan but said it hoped to resume supplies from Wednesday, January 25.
According to its Ministry of Energy, Tashkent was forced to suspend supplies to Afghanistan 10 days ago, in order to provide power to its own people.
In addition to a fuel shortage at their geothermal power plants, technical problems and a high domestic demand due to extremely cold weather forced Uzbekistan to suspend services to Afghanistan, the ministry said.
“The Energy Organization of Afghanistan has been warned about this major problem,” the statement read. This comes after the Taliban’s minister of foreign affairs Amir Khan Muttaqi on Sunday called on Uzbekistan to comply with the terms of the agreement recently signed by both countries and to resume services.
