A prominent tribal elder was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on Tuesday morning, according to local sources.
The victim, identified as Hajiullah Nazar, was attacked in Surkh Rod district as he was leaving his home, sources told Amu TV. Witnesses said the assailants, who were riding motorcycles, opened fire before fleeing the area.
Mr. Nazar was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries, the sources said.
Members of his family confirmed the killing and said the attackers were unidentified armed men on motorcycles.
A source within the Taliban police command in Nangarhar confirmed the incident but did not provide further details about a possible motive or the identity of the attackers. He said an investigation had been opened into the incident.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the killing.
The attack comes amid growing concern over a series of unresolved killings across Afghanistan. Last week, the head of a metalworkers’ union in Herat, who was also known as a prominent landowner, was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants, according to local sources.
Although overall violence in Afghanistan has declined since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, residents and rights groups continue to report cases of targeted killings and unexplained attacks in several provinces.
