Crash in Helmand kills three, injures four

A traffic accident in southern Afghanistan killed three people and injured four others, local Taliban officials said on Monday.

The crash occurred in the Khanashin district of Helmand province, according to a statement by Taliban’s provincial police command, who confirmed the incident but provided few details about its cause.

The injured were taken to a provincial hospital, where some were reported to be in critical condition.

Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in Afghanistan, with residents frequently citing poor road conditions, lack of traffic signs and limited enforcement of safety regulations as major factors.

Some citizens have criticized relevant authorities for failing to address deteriorating infrastructure, saying such conditions contribute to frequent and often fatal crashes.

Data released by Taliban police officials in Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan underscores the scale of the problem. Over the past year, at least 122 traffic accidents were recorded in that province alone, resulting in 136 deaths and 175 injuries.
