Clashes were reported between Taliban and Pakistani border troops in the southern province of Zabul as the ceasefire between the two sides comes to an end.
Sources in Zabul told Amu TV that fighting broke out Monday night in Shimalzai district along the border with Pakistan.
Sources added that the clashes began after Pakistani forces carried out artillery shelling on residential areas. The exchange of fire lasted about two hours, they said.
There were no immediate details on casualties or damage, though sources said mortar rounds struck civilian homes.
Neither Taliban nor Pakistani officials have commented on the reported incident.
The clash marks the first reported fighting in the border area since the end of a five-day ceasefire announced by Pakistan during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. During the ceasefire, Taliban reported at least three incidents in Paktia, Nuristan and Kunar in which they said the truce was violated by Pakistan and that three civilians were dead. Pakistan has rejected violation of the ceasefire.
The Taliban-Pakistan clashes started on Feb. 26 and are now in their fourth week. UN has said that at least 76 civilians were killed and 193 others were wounded in eastern Afghanistan in the first two weeks of the clashes.
