At least nine people were killed and 35 others injured on Sunday morning when a passenger bus overturned on a highway in western Afghanistan, Taliban officials said.
The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on the Badghis–Herat highway in the Sabzak area, within the jurisdiction of the sixth security district of Qala-e-Naw, the center of Badghis province in the west, according to Sediqullah Sediqi, spokesman for the Taliban provincial police command.
The passenger bus was traveling from Herat to Qala-e-Naw when the driver lost control due to what Taliban described as negligence, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.
Among those killed were women and children, the statement said. Several of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The statement added that the wounded were transferred to nearby medical centers, and traffic police have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Traffic accidents are common on Afghanistan’s highways, where poor road conditions, aging vehicles and reckless driving frequently contribute to deadly incidents.
